Botticelli: From a Goldsmith Apprentice Into a Great Painter

Alessandro Filipepi, a great Renaissance painter, is most commonly referred to as Sandro Botticelli. Youngest amongst five, he was born in March 1, 1445 in Florence, Italy. When he was fourteen, he is a goldsmith's apprentice. The term botticelli was given by the goldsmith which means a small barrel.

After convincing his father, he chose to be an apprentice of Fra Filippo Lippi - famous in using color on paintings and carvings in churches. He taught Botticelli his own techniques which the latter has further developed. And as soon as 15 years old, Botticelli organized his own workshop.

Botticelli's works which possesses sad features is Medici family's (a well-known family in Florence, Italy ) favorite. Most of his paintings portray female domination. He also does work of arts combining Christian beliefs with pagan ideas. He painted three masterpieces in Sistine Chapel, along with the famous Michelangelo, as well. His styles changed as Florence changes. His works are transformed from sad to ungodly arts as he became Savonarola's (a monk and a leader at the same time) follower. His works even portray death and God's anger. Sometimes, his paintings represent violence, sometimes that of kindness.

He remains a bachelor until he died at the age of 65. He even said that marriage is a nightmare to him as he shows his dislike to the idea itself. His works are forgotten for about 400 years after his death as people recognize the rising of new and talented artist by then like Leonarda Da Vinci.

Sandro Botticelli es el sobrenombre con el que es conocido Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, pintor, dibujante y grabador italiano del Renacimiento, muy valorado en la actualidad. Nació en Florencia en 1445 (aunque existen dudas de que fuera en 1444) y murió en la misma Ciudad en el año 1510. Discípulo de Filippo Lippi, también realizó estudios literarios, aspecto inusual en la época. Hacia el año 1470, con veinticinco años ya contaba con un taller propio en Florencia, ciudad que en aquellos momentos se encontraba en pleno apogeo económico, político y cultural. Sus primeras obras fueron "Vírgenes con el Niño", que continúan la tendencia de su maestro Filippo Lippi, con escenas de tipo intimista, aunque ya desde el primer momento se detecta su propio mundo formal caracterizado por el ritmo sutil construido a base de líneas ondulantes tanto en los cuerpos como en las vestimentas, con cuerpos colocados en posturas ausentes de rigidez, cabezas suavemente inclinadas y rostros de melancólica belleza.
